Behind every sport is a unique dialect that every player, fan, and coach is familiar with. Each phrase has its own backstory behind it that gives it meaning, for some of the terms the roots go back decades and have been staples in their respective game since then. What are all the Dub athletes and athletes around the world saying these days?
Bean Top (Basketball/Football):
- To dunk over an opposing player in a dominant manner; “Oh my goodness LeBron just bean topped Jason Terry.”
- Synonymous with getting mossed- to catch a football over somebody else or on their head; “The entire Bills secondary just got bean topped by DeAndre Hopkins.”
Bar Down/Bardownski (Soccer/Hockey): To hit the upright of a soccer or hockey goal with the ball/puck and have it go in: “Bedard’s bardownski last night was crazy.”
Crossed Up (Basketball): To make a defender fall or go in the wrong direction by hitting them with a dribble move; “Kyrie just hit the nastiest step back to cross up Tayshaun Prince.”
Nutmeg/Meg (Soccer): To dribble or kick the ball through an opposing player/defender’s legs; “Ronaldinho megging Shephard and Neville was so disrespectful.”
Laser: (Any): To throw or kick a ball with such force that it travels in a straight line without rising and dropping; “Albies’ laser from behind second to home to stop the Nats from scoring was ridiculous”
Dime (Any): To make a pass so accurate that you “put it on a dime”; “That touchdown pass to Diggs was an absolute dime.”
Nuke (Baseball): To hit a baseball very hard typically resulting in a home run; “Olson’s 464-foot nuke against the Phillies was crazy.”
Brexit (Soccer): To intentionally violently slide tackle an opposing player usually out of malice; “Roy Keane just hit Alfie Haaland with the craziest brexit tackle.”
Green (Basketball): To release a perfect shot that usually does no touch the rim but swishes; “Curry is the best shooter of all time, everything he puts up is green.”
G.O.A.T (Any): The greatest of all time; “Tom Brady is the undisputed G.O.A.T of football.”
Hit Stick (Football): To tackle somebody with high force usually knocking them backwards or causing a fumble; “Jayden Daniels getting hit sticked every week is becoming a certainty.”
Mickey Mouse Ring (Any): A championship win viewed as easy due to the path to get there and the opponents faced; “LeBron’s bubble finals win was not a Mickey Mouse championship.”
