Already well known for their sharp kicks and peppy spirit, the North Atlanta cheer squad has more in store for this school year. After conditioning extensively over the summer, the cheerleaders have trained to perform difficult stunts that require ample strength and coordination. In time for the start of the school year, the cheerleaders brought in a professional outside coach to mentor them in executing these advanced techniques. Excited for this season, students have long anticipated seeing the cheerleaders further exhibit their skills at the upcoming games.
Off the field, the cheerleaders were fortunate enough to have a competition cheer coach who created their new routine. Antonio Colbert has been coaching for 14 years and graduated from North Atlanta in 2008. Now in 2023, he has returned to assist the current cheer squad in pursuing greater heights. With his professional aid, the team now has refined preps, extensions, show-and-go’s, and even a front flip dismount. “I hope to set a strong foundation for the program,” said Coach Colbert. “Practice with this squad has been great so far and I can’t wait to build more relationships with future athletes to come.”
The cheer team was thrilled after learning they would be taught to stunt. Many looked forward to taking on the challenge, as it has been almost four years since NAHS cheer has stunted consistently at games. During summer practice, they built strength and endurance to perform these skills. Stunts also require teamwork and after many trials, the cheerleaders have bonded with each other. “It’s just as fun behind the scenes,” said sophomore Chloe Ashford. “Every time we fall, I feel like we’re even closer as a team.”
Under the lights of the first football game, the cheerleaders kicked off the season with a shining show, presenting their new and improved stunts. As they spirited toward the stands, the student section grew louder, rooting for the cheer squad to reveal their updated routine. From freshmen to seniors, they continued to encourage the cheerleaders throughout the game. “The crowd did not expect to see cheerleaders in the air,” said senior Harrison Balch. “We definitely have something to look forward to at games this year.”
Thanks to team efforts and a new coach, North Atlanta’s school spirit has entered another level of pep. The Warriors await to see more of what the cheerleaders have in store for them as the season progresses. With their new improvements this year, the cheer squad is now not only visible on the track, but in the air too.
