As the leaves start to change colors and the school year settles into a rhythm, a dynamic force is taking the courts of North Atlanta. These aren’t just any athletes; they’re the Warriors of the volleyball court. With each serve, spike, and rally, the varsity volleyball team is rewriting the script of their season, turning it into an electrifying quest for success.
Playing against tougher opponents in their new, challenging region has been a true test this season for these athletes. With the adjustment of moving forward without the legendary class of 2023, it’s safe to say they’ve faced some hurdles. However, the team has been coming together more with each practice and game and is looking to capitalize on that momentum. “We’ve learned that it’s not about the challenges we face but how we rise above them together,” said Co-captain Sedona Gibson “We’re proving that we’re not just a team, we’re a family, and nothing can break our spirit.”
This team would not be complete without its Class of 2024 seniors: Sedona Gibson, Della Buck, Lanie Mahaffey, Mattie Mahaffey, Annabelle Whitehead, and Noelle Driggers. Their unwavering commitment to the team since their freshman year has made them indispensable members of it, both talent-wise and attitude-wise. While the season is not yet over, the Dubs are already mourning the loss of these six gifted athletes. “The closer we get to the end of the season, the more I know it will hurt to say goodbye to this team and sport,” said senior Mattie Mahaffey.
With their sights set firmly on making state, a feat they last achieved in 2021, the team is fueled by determination and guided by an exceptional coaching staff. Head Coach Lane Perno, a proud Georgia Volleyball Alumni, leads the way with her wealth of experience and a passion for the game that is contagious. She’s supported by the capable hands of Assistant Coaches Kelly Conner and Samantha Johnston, forming a formidable coaching trio. “If we continue to work together with dedication and our amazing coaches, then maybe we can reach State again,” said senior Della Buck.
As this exciting season unfolds, it’s clear that the team is hitting its stride and consistently leveling up. With their eyes locked on securing the coveted top spot in the region, their commitment is unwavering. Excited to see what the second half of the season brings, the NAHS volleyball squad pushes forward to victory.
