After a year of music festival deprivation, one of Atlanta’s most anticipated events, Music Midtown, is making its comeback. Students are jubilantly anticipating the event, in which some of their favorite musical artists gather on stage in the local Piedmont park for 3 lively days. Headlining the event are some well-loved artists, including Pink, Flume, Billie Eilish, The 1975, Guns N’ Roses, and Lil Baby. Needless to say, the lineup is quite compelling, and students could not be happier that Music Midtown is back and better than ever.
50,000 excited attendees were left heavily disappointed following the festival’s abrupt cancellation last year, many North Atlanta students included. While there was never a full explanation regarding the reasoning, it was reportedly a result of the state’s gun laws, specifically the 2014 “Safe Carry Protection Act.” This act requires public properties, Piedmont Park included, to allow legal gun owners to carry firearms, giving the festival a legal inability to enforce a “no weapon policy.” Despite these laws remaining unchanged, it is certainly relieving for avid Music Midtown goers that something has prompted its comeback. “Last year was a huge bummer, but I understood it was a matter of safety,” said senior Olivia Granot. “I love music festivals, though, and Music Midtown is unlike any other, so I am extremely excited it is back.”
In terms of the festival lineup, students were incredibly excited to hear that numerous artists of high esteem would be performing. The headliners are largely popular within the current booming music industry and tend to pull in large crowds at their own respective concerts, making it a large reason for appeal for students who get to see some of their favorite artists all in the course of a weekend. With a wide range of artists over the course of the weekend, students are left with many options, and it is highly likely that each person attending has reason for excitement. “I’m definitely most excited to see Guns n’ Roses,” said senior Natasha Havey. “Especially because they most likely won’t be going on tour for much longer after Music Midtown. This could be the last opportunity for me to see them.”
Although the present laws in Georgia that canceled last year’s festival still remain, Music Midtown’s exciting decision to return is good news for many individuals who missed out in previous years. Artists will take the stage September 15-17, meaning the event is right around the corner. So Dubs, get your tickets together, pick out your outfits, and get ready for multiple nights of music-filled fun!
