In the span of the last four years, the Warriors softball team has undergone a remarkable transformation. Shifting from seasons of struggle to a 4 consecutive year winning streak in the regional championships, their evolution has been nothing short of impressive. At the heart of this achievement is senior Taylor Ryan, an indispensable member of the team’s exceptionally talented roster. As a third baseman for the Dubs, Ryan has left a significant mark throughout her four-year time playing at the varsity level.
Ryan began playing her beloved sport in the 5th grade and hasn’t stopped since. However, softball has consistently presented her with challenges. From the pressures of her early years to the intricate juggling act of academics, softball, and maintaining a social life as she transitioned into high school, the path has not been without its difficulties. “Being a student athlete requires a different lifestyle to succeed,” said Ryan. “It has been very rigorous with the IB DP program and softball every single day during the school season. I normally don’t get home until 9 every night at least and I can really only see my friends on Saturday nights when I’m in season.”
This team is like family, no doubt about it. When you play alongside your best friends, you build a special bond that’s hard to find anywhere else. Having coaches who’ve got your back, both during the game and in everyday life, just adds to the great experience. “My teammates have been through thick and thin with me and I wouldnt trade that for the world,” said Ryan. “My coach, Ricky Plante is one of my all-time favorite people. His support goes beyond softball. Seeing Rick lights up my day, and I truly appreciate his sacrifices and contributions to our team and to me personally.”
Saying goodbye to a sport that has felt like home for the better half of your life cannot be easy. After seeing one of her best friends, Mia Alcaron, leave the Warriors last year, Ryan knows it will be devastating when it is her turn. However she knows it is time for her to move on. “I will forever be grateful for the opportunities and relationships NAHS softball has given me,” said Ryan. “I am excited for the future but it is bittersweet knowing this is my last season playing the sport I love, at the school I love. I am just going to try to enjoy the remaining time I have left and let it all sink in.”
The Dubs look to capitalize on their momentum as the team is improving more and more everyday. They have been battling some fierce competition recently but currently boast a solid 3-1 record in the region, 7-4 record overall. Looking at the horizon, the absence of Taylor Ryan’s exceptional skills and vibrant energy next year will undoubtedly bring about a noticeable shift. Softball has shaped her into a leader, honing her communication skills, teamwork, and competitive spirit. While the Dubs community is dreading Ryan’s exit from the North Atlanta sports scene, we know she will go on to do great things. Best of luck Taylor! Go Dubs!
