Did someone say comeback of the century? This phrase seems to echo through the halls of North Atlanta this school year. The comeback in question: fan-favorite teacher Adam Nelson back from his year abroad. The teaching scene is no easy feat; sometimes the ones who lead our Dubs are the ones who need the most time to recover. Nelson is no exception, and his year abroad proves that with some rest and relaxation, our already great teachers can provide an even more incredible experience for students.
Of course, the burning question on everyone’s minds deals with Nelson’s favorite spot on the map. As students awaited his noteworthy return, many had their interests piqued by the promise of travel stories. After a year abroad, surely it is tough to choose a favorite place. The pseudocelebrity himself even had trouble plucking his favorite place from the bunch. “England was spectacular because I got to see an Everton Premier League game,” said Nelson. “After watching every game on TV for fifteen years, it was a pretty incredible experience.”
Naturally, a year abroad looks a lot different—and a lot more interesting—for someone with extensive global knowledge. This awareness proved to be very helpful for Nelson as he grew into his globetrotter role. While traversing the world, it is a must for travelers to steer away from the stereotype of the ‘ignorant American tourist.’ “I knew what languages were common in each region, which was helpful for communication,” said Nelson. “More importantly, I was conscious of the cultures around me and was able to respect them because of my prior knowledge.”
Despite the allure of an adventure, Dorothy Gale’s words always prove true: there’s no place like home. After a year of travel, Nelson felt the same and was finally ready to start his long-awaited return to the Dubs. Aside from the inviting environment North Atlanta provides, the idea of teaching AP Human Geography again was too enticing to stay away from. “I genuinely enjoyed my previous three years here, and I fell in love with the AP Human course,” he said. “I also kept in touch with a few co-workers, and I am excited to get to work with them again.”
Amid the excitement from students and fellow staff members, Nelson is thrilled to begin another year with the Warriors. As for the students, it is easy to see that everyone is ready for the return of terrific classes and Tropical Tuesday celebrations. Welcome back, Mr. Nelson!
