Over the past few years, crocheting and knitting have been on the rise amongst the young people of the world. For many, what started as a pandemic activity has now become a full-time hobby. A fun way to make your very own clothes, accessories, or plushies. As crochet has risen in popularity, it has become only fit for a Knit and Crochet group to join the selection of clubs available to the dubs.
This gap in the world of NAHS clubs did not go unnoticed by Sophomore, Sophia Fahrni. Originally having learned from her grandmother, she picked up the ancient skills out of boredom and ended up with a new appreciation for yarn-related crafts, knitting and crochet included. She took charge and did what no one had done. Fahrni aimed to create a space where those that wanted to learn knitting or crocheting would have a place to start, as well as a place for the more experienced to discuss project ideas, make new friends, and possibly help some of the beginners. Fahrni has furthered her members’ abilities enough for them to make clothes and wear them in the outside world. “When people compliment my own work, I can tell them I made it!” she said, “I want others to also be able to do that.”
Although the year may have just started, there are big ideas brewing for the Knit and Crochet Club. As the beginners learn more about their craft of choice and get better, Fahrni also wants to make a community quilt out of different pieces made by each club member to showcase for years to come. A creative way to show what students could learn and create if they joined, as well as a representation of how the community of dubs can grow and come together. Additionally, during the cold winter months, the club will make mittens, scarves, and hats to donate to homeless shelters to help keep them warm. Senior Bode Torgrimson is eager and excited to learn a new hobby from their fellow peers. After the first meeting, Torigrimson said “I will admit it has been kinda hard to learn but I’m sure it will all pay off in the end.”
Every new club brings to life a new community within North Atlanta. The Knit and Crochet club in particular is off to a great start with new and eager members to start their crafting journey, make some new friends, and have an overall enjoyable experience. The club is surely to be a success but only time will tell as the year unravels like a ball of yarn.
