To the average fan, high school football is back for the first time since November, but the players themselves know otherwise. After months of sacrifice, grinding, and growing the Warriors are ready to show the world what they’re made of. Wednesday, August 16th, the Dubs start their quest for greatness at the Corky Kell Classic against John’s Creek, eager to make history once again.
In a 31-27 thriller in the 2022 opener against North Forsyth, the Dubs seized the win as time expired in the 4th, setting the tone for the rest of the historic year. From there they set countless program records. No doubt the landmark win not only put the Dubs on the map but gave them an immeasurable amount of momentum for the remainder of the year. One can only hope that Wednesday’s game can do the same for this year’s team. “For sure last year set the tone for the whole season,” said Quarterback Ian Reynolds. “That’s the goal for us this week.”
A historically good team, Johns Creek will surely be a formidable foe. Especially with the addition of head coach Jim Rowell- formerly the defensive coordinator of the Cambridge Bears. The main angle of preparation for the Warriors heading into this game is how this newly run Johns Creek team is going to operate. “We’ve been preparing for weeks. Running through their plays, watching film from all over, you name it and we’ve done it to prepare,” said defensive end Chase Linton.
While the success of last year’s team is gonna be a cultural staple for years, this year there are a lot of new faces in the starting lineup. This team has the exigency to show that this isn’t the same old North Atlanta and to prove they’re here to stay as a legitimate contender. Aiming to create a new legacy, even greater than the 22’ team is the ultimate goal. “We don’t want to stop here. It’s great that we got a playoff win last year,” said left tackle Ben Diedrich. “But we want to go above and beyond even further.”
Come 4:30 on the night of August 16th, the offseason will officially be over, and a new chance arises that can show Dubs are here to stay. With the start of another year, the ascent of a new era of winning is shown. When the game clock hits 0 in the 4th quarter, only 1 winner can emerge victorious, and this Corky Kell Classic game is sure to be a good one.
