With the new school year in full swing, many students are on the hunt for the perfect, new back-to-school wardrobe. For many, this can be hours spent on the computer considering all the enticing deals, whereas others venture out to thrift stores looking for cheaper alternatives. August 17th marks the National Thrift Shop Day and this unsung holiday can inspire many to start supporting secondhand shopping.
Thrifting is a widespread phenomenon taking over the world for the better. Many have started secondhand shopping as a sustainable, budget-friendly approach to help save the planet. It is a great way to limit overspending and can be an amusing pastime to hang out with friends. For senior Grace Nyberg, the allure of thrifting creates endless possibilities of what she can find. “I love it because I never know what is going to be there, but I always end up finding something great!” she said.
Awareness is starting to build over the numerous downsides of fast fashion, with many becoming more self-conscious of what they are spending their precious money on. Senior Lauren Davis recalls the many fun times she has spent thrifting with her friends, looking for the most riotous fits they could uncover. “Finding simple and unique clothes for less money is my favorite part of thrifting,” she said. “I always have fun looking for random t-shirts that make me laugh.”
As this global phenomenon rises in popularity, online secondhand shopping is also gaining traction. The vast benefits of the all too frequently used e-commerce platforms can be reflected in the thrifting world through sites such as ThreadUp and Depop. Depop not only allows people to discover special pieces, they can also sell some of their lesser-worn articles of clothing in order to make back some of what they’re spending. Junior Corinne Evans finds herself reflecting on the upsides of these sites. “I love online thrifting because sometimes going to stores can be disappointing when I cannot find what I’m looking for,” she said. “But online, I can find exactly what I want and have it delivered straight to me!”
There is no excuse to not secondhand shop; being inexpensive, accessible, and eco-friendly, it is a win all-around. Not only does it leave people feeling good about their purchases, but also their bank accounts. So, the next time you fall into the trap of fast fashion, instead think fashion for a fraction!
