On every floor of North Atlanta, great educators stroll the wide hallways. Some inspire, some motivate, and a select few: set the example. Tucked away in the nook of the 4th floor, Jessica Snead’s familiar voice can be heard over many. Snead epitomizes a teacher leading through her actions. The 9th-grade biology teacher is getting her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction of Science. She does this while bringing passion, excitement, and motivation to her classroom year-round.
Originally, Snead dreamt of being a medical doctor to help save lives. In 2010, she received her bachelor’s degree in biomedical science while attending Auburn University. The degree developed her knowledge of current technological health advances, human biology, and more regarding healthcare. “I wanted to be in the field of science and be a medical doctor to help people,” said Snead.
With Snead’s early success came a bittersweet realization. Working as a doctor was not her true calling. She wanted to be a teacher. So, in 2015, the determined Snead graduated once again from college with another certificate. This time she proudly held her teaching certificate from the University of Alabama Birmingham, (UAB). With her calling seemingly fulfilled, she dove into the classroom environment. Keeping students interested is very important to her, which is exemplified by her daily encouragement. “I always tell my students to make everything they learn personal,” said Snead, “and to connect what you do in the classroom with your daily life.”
For a few years, her persistent drive toward excellence was kept at bay by the rigors of the classroom. Eventually, her audacious personality was ready for another challenge. So instead of leaving behind the job she loves to do, she is getting better at it. Currently, her thirst for knowledge has landed her at Georgia State University. She is attempting (although it’s pretty much a given) to receive her Doctorate for Curriculum and Instruction of Science. Snead said, “I want to learn as much as I can, while I can, and that drives me every day.”
As Snead continues to chase after her dreams, she is consistent in the classroom. Entering North Atlanta’s 11 stories every morning, she energizes students with a simple mindset, “be your best self.”
There is no doubt about it, Jessica Snead can do anything. So maybe as the time moves along, her title will continue to grow. Jessica Snead: Doctor, Teacher, and next up Astronaut.
