Early Season Losses Don’t Dampen Football Team’s Spirit
The rough football season last year at North Atlanta left all Warriors wondering if this year is going to be just the same. And the past three losses of 15 to 0 to River Ridge, 44 to 3 to Dalton, and 55 to 0 to Riverwood have done nothing to change these difficult thoughts.
Despite these dispiriting outcomes, the team is keeping a positive mindset for the remainder of the season. “We’re going to keep our heads up and keep working hard,” said Majesty Hansberry, a sophomore tailback.
When it comes down to things the Warrior team needs to improve on, the list seems to go on and on. But rather than focusing on drills and techniques, most surveyed players touched on something more fundamental. Rather than expressing the need for improvement in offensive or defensive strategies, most agreed that what really is needed are improvements in attitudes, energy, and most of all, brotherhood. “There is brotherhood among us, but it’s not quite where it needs to be,” said Zach Flash, a sophomore kicker.
A strong brotherhood among players not only is beneficial for team spirit, but it also can lead to points on a scoreboard. For many teams, chemistry among players is the number one factor behind winning games.
Although the players all admit to their need for improvement on the field, they also agreed that changes need to be made regarding North Atlanta’s school spirit. “North Atlanta has absolutely no school spirit,” said Spencer Shelton, a senior fullback.
Shelton also pointed out something very important to consider. “After the pep rally, we played better,” he said.
The only game the team has won so far was the game against Kipp Academy. The final score was 22 to 6 and it followed the school’s energetic pep rally.
It seems that the only way the football record will improve is if the players and the rest of the student body work together to improve the attitudes toward the upcoming games. It’s hoped that changes in scores are just around the corner for the Warriors.
