Class of 2023’s Victorious Valedictorian: Kate Zappa
Being named the prestige honor of valedictorian requires sacrifice and commitment, a truth Kate Zappa, North Atlanta High Schools’ 2023 valedictorian, knows all too well. A well-rounded and accomplished student, Zappa embodies what a true star student should be. After four years of hard work and dedication, she recognizes that it has been a difficult but worthwhile victory, and she will look back on her time at North Atlanta fondly.
During her time at North Atlanta, she’s made great memories within the classroom and after school on the soccer field and in clubs, always surrounded by friends. She often turns to her friends for help, crediting them for aiding in her success. However, they are not her only influences; teachers Mr. Ehrman, Mr. Lundy, and Mrs. Hunter have guided her in and out of the classroom. Part of her rationale for IB Literature being her favorite class is Mr. Lundy, her star teacher. “It’s very engaging to read and discuss books in class,” said Zappa, and while she may not be an actor, she enjoys in-class performances.
Outside the walls of North Atlanta, she enjoys strumming on the guitar, putting together puzzles, knitting, and reading. But, like most teenagers, most of her free time is spent hanging out with friends, watching TV with her family, and going on walks. In terms of extracurriculars, she’s participated in several clubs: Mu Alpha Theta, Academic Bowl, and YAPA Kids. “These don’t exactly align with my hobbies, but I chose them based on my interests and what I thought would be the most enjoyable,” said Zappa. While it’s normal to want to choose prestigious clubs, she attempted to stay true to herself. “I did worry about my resume throughout high school, but I didn’t change my clubs and activities because of it,” said Zappa.
Zappa shares her tools for success; teacher-provided guides, quizlets, and online practice have always been her go-to for studying. In addition to taking advantage of your resources, Zappa advises current or future students to “stay on top of work the best you can.”
Her trusty tool for this is Google Calendar. As much as Zappa is prepared, she doesn’t enjoy walking into class and suddenly realizing it’s test day. Zappa already has graduation marked on her Google calendar, ready for the next chapter of her life, but she won’t forget her days as a dub anytime soon.
