A Trash-Worthy Trick or a Tasty Treat?: The Best and the Worst of Halloween Candies

Trick or Treat! This classic Halloween tradition involves dressing up and going door to door to different homes in a wild search of candy. Those who take pride in participating in the accustomed ritual often set out with high ambitions of receiving a bucket full of favorable candies. Though surely by now, it is well known that trick-or-treating at certain doors can quite frankly be a hit or miss. With that in mind, this raises the question of the best kind of candy one can receive on Halloween night. To find an answer, we had students at NAHS deem which candies they would be most excited to receive on Halloween night, and which ones are worth the trade (or the trash).

Let’s introduce our inferiorly deemed candies first. There was a wide range of candies hated upon, though the most frequent appearing candies that resurfaced were the shared hatred among Milky Ways, DOTS, Almond Joys, Milk Duds, Laffy Taffy, 3 Musketeers, Almond Joys, any bootleg gummies, candy corn, Tootsie Rolls, Double Bubble, and anything else that downright isn’t candy. A list of acceptable answers to the question. These are the types of candies one would commonly find at the bottom of their bucket in a week’s time once they’ve run out of their preferred candy. Though, we also received a few unpopular opinions from sources who wish not to be named, claiming they found the most unappealing candies to receive on Halloween night are Twix, Skittles, Smarties, Reeses, KitKats, Nerds, and Snickers – a list full of hot takes for sure. “Why should I be excited over receiving some Laffy Taffy or a Milky Way?” said junior Chloe Middleton. “Maybe it’s so I can scream in horror as they get stuck to my teeth and I am forced to bear the flavor for a second longer.”

Fortunately, more candies made the list of approval for NAHS students. Upon asking which are the more highly-rated Halloween candies, a plethora of answers was received. Butterfingers, Sour Patch Kids, Trolli Gummy Worms, Oreo Hershey Chocolates, Starburst, White Chocolate KitKats, Haribo Gummies, M&M’s, Twizzlers, Airheads, Mike and Ikes, Hershey Kisses, Swedish Fish, Starburst, Tootsie Pops, Twizzlers, and Jolly Ranchers, were all among those that received hype. But the one candy that received the most amount of praise was Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. This is the type of candy that, after seeing them in your Halloween basket, gets you so excited to eat them that you can hardly wait until you get home. “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is the only correct answer,” said junior Trey Harris. “It’s the perfect recipe calculated for mass consumption, I could eat like 20 in one sitting. The ratio of chocolate to peanut butter and the way the flavors merge together is done incredibly well, these should honestly be everyone’s favorite, and if they aren’t, reevaluate.”

Trick-or-treating is a large excitement associated with Halloween. Halloween can typically be used as an excuse to binge on your favorite candies without facing any (immediate) repercussions for your actions, just for the sake of it being celebrated. When given such an opportunity, nobody wants to waste it on garbage-worthy candies. Only the tastiest candies will be accepted, for anything else is just seen as abominable. Perhaps the real gist behind Trick or Treating is not knowing whether or not you’ll be tricked out of enjoying a real treat.
