New Art Takes Stairwells From Drab to Fab
From melting cities to three-piece wolves, colorful and bold art has appeared on the walls of the North Atlanta High stairwells for the new school year. The art was installed before school started and now accentuates the stairwells, taking the previously unused space and turning it into stairwell art that rivals any museum.
Natalie Brandhorst, longtime art instructor at the school, launched the initiative to give the stairwells more personality. The objective behind the art is to add life to the school and make it a less drab place, Brandhorst said. “The goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing environment, that makes kids want to be here,” Brandhorst explains.
The paintings were done by Karen Diaz, Anna French, Bishop Wright, Madelyn Grainger, Zuri Scott, Callie Nelson, Allison Fiveash, Julious Washington, Jacob Archer, Ehrieme Momodu and Claire Shea, all students in her art classes last spring. One of the more noteworthy paintings in the stairwell is the three-piece wolf by Archer and Momodu. Students have described the work as mysterious and beautiful.
Brandhorst and her talented students are not finished, by any means. She also hinted at a few unfinished paintings that will be displayed around the school in the coming weeks, including a mural depicting John Lennon.
